Between June and October of 2011, the Office of Public Advocate Bill de Blasio has experienced a sharp increase in constituent complaints from landlords and tenants regarding the New York City Housing Authority’s (NYCHA) Section 8 program. The housing voucher program administered by NYCHA is a lifeline for nearly 100,000 households, helping them secure safe and decent housing they might otherwise be unable to afford. But because of bureaucratic red tape and technical errors, NYCHA is failing to provide on-time rent at the appropriate level, leaving tenants at risk of eviction.
