Statement by Public Advocate Gotbaum on Test Score Results
Public Advocate Gotbaum said, "While we hope these results do reflect real progress, they raise more questions than offer answers. After all, if New York City is making such a big jump on our performance on state tests, why do our scores on the NAEP test – this nation’s gold standard test – remain flat? And why did so many other cities in the state, including traditionally low-performing ones like Buffalo and Rochester, see similar dramatic increases? Until these questions are addressed, I’ll keep saying what needs to be said: when we overemphasize tests we undervalue too many other aspects of an effective, well-rounded education.”
